Shih Tzu means “Little Lion” in Mandarin and it is thought that the breed originated in China around 800 B.C. Shih Tzu’s are a cross between two breeds, Lhaso Apso and Pekingese. It is said that they were bred to resemble small lions. In the Buddhist practice, it is known that Buddha himself rode to Earth on the back of a lion which made this breed highly respected in Imperial China due to their tiny lion-like appearance. Shih Tzu’s were raised for royalty during both the Ming and Manchu Dynasties. Shih Tzu’s were used as bed warmers (still are!) and lovingly loyal companions for many in the royal courts.
The recipe for a Shih Tzu that many owners of the breed are familiar with is as follows: “… a dash of lion, several teaspoons of rabbit, a couple of ounces of domestic cat, one part court jester, a dash of ballerina, a pinch of old man, a bit of beggar, a tablespoon of monkey, one part baby seal, (and) a dash of teddy bear.”
Reason 1 – Bred for Companionship
The whole motivation for Shih Tzu’s being bred was to be companions for royalty in Imperial China. This hasn’t changed in 2018. Shih Tzu’s are still extremely great companions. They are completely devoted to their owners and extremely loyal. Shih Tzu’s are loving and caring pets that live to make their owners happy!
Reason 2 – Incredible Personality and Temperament

Shih Tzu’s have a great temperament and make excellent pets for just about everyone from young children to elderly individuals. These dogs are affectionate and loving, yet spunky and goofy with a great sense of humor.
Since Shih Tzu’s were bred for royalty, many owners can attest that their pets exhibit some proud and arrogant almost aristocratic tendencies from time to time. Shih Tzu’s tend to walk arrogantly with their flat little noses held high in the air. Trust me, they know they’re cute. However, the breed is sweet-natured, friendly, and polite. These dogs are also quite adaptable and do well in any environment. Shih Tzu’s are also not very yippy which is quite uncommon for toy breeds.
Reason 3 – Variety of Coats
Unlike some breeds that primarily have the same appearance, Shih Tzu’s come in a variety of colors! Ranging from black and white to brindle or even gold and white, Shih Tzu’s take on a variety of coats. However, one constant that remains is a lush furry coat that doesn’t shed!

In conclusion, Shih Tzu’s are the very best dog breed. There are many reasons why Shih Tzu’s stand out from the pack. They have incredible personalities and were bred to be loving and loyal companions. Simply put, these “Little Lion’s,” love to be loved. Shih Tzu’s are devoted animals that have an incredible temperament and are the perfect pet for just about anyone, I Shih Tzu not!
